Lost in Translation? Do all Bibles really say the same things?

1. Is it hard to get to heaven?

Mark 10:24

KJV

And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!

NASB

The disciples were amazed at His words. But Jesus answered again and said to them, “Children, how hard it is [] to enter the kingdom of God!

2. Sinners are called to do what?

Matthew 9:13

KJV

But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

NASB

But go and learn what this means: ‘I DESIRE COMPASSION, AND NOT SACRIFICE,’ for I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners [].”

ESV

Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners [].”

 

3. What must we believe to have eternal life?

John 6:47

KJV

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on Me hath everlasting life.

4. Is Christ equal with God?

Philippians 2:6

Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:

5. What hinders me from being baptized (Acts 8:36)?

6. Was Jesus born of a virgin?

7. Man lives by what?

Luke 4:4

ESV

8. Did Christ come for all, or only a select few?

Luke 2:14

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

NASB

Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.

ESV

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”

 

9. Did Jesus lie?

John 7:8,10

KJV

8. Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast: for my time is not yet full come.

10. But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret.

NASB

8. Go up to the feast yourselves; I do not go up [] to this feast because My time has not yet fully come.”

10. Is it okay to be righteously angry?

Matt 5:22

But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother [] shall be guilty before the court;

ESV

But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother [] will be liable to judgment…

 

11. Should I marry a divorced woman?

Matt 19:9

KJV

And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.

NASB

And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery. []

ESV

And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery. []

 

12. How do I recognize an evil spirit?

1 John 4:3

KJV

And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

NASB

and every spirit that does not confess Jesus [] is not from God; this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and now it is already in the world.

ESV

13. How do I resist powerful demons?

Matt 17:21

15. Who appeared in the fiery furnace?

Daniel 3:25

He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.

NASB

He answered and said, “But I see four men unbound, walking in the midst of the fire, and they are not hurt; and the appearance of the fourth is like a son of the gods.”

ESV

He answered and said, “But I see four men unbound, walking in the midst of the fire, and they are not hurt; and the appearance of the fourth is like a son of the gods.”

 

16. My donkey is my son?

Luke 14:5

KJV

And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day?

NASB

He said to them, “Which one of you shall have a son or an ox fall into a well, and will not immediately pull him out on a Sabbath day?”

ESV

And he said to them, “Which of you, having a son or an ox that has fallen into a well on a Sabbath day, will not immediately pull him out?”

 

17. 70 times 7 equals 77?

Matthew 18:22

KJV

Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.

NIV

Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.
